Graduation loomed and I, ever the procrastinator, hadn't applied to any jobs yet. I'm the girl who took on six different internships during college while keeping a job and holding a leadership position on my sorority's council, but I couldn't seem to find time to dedicate to figuring out my post-grad life.
Once the pandemic hit full force, and I found out I would never be returning to campus to finish my senior year, I assumed I would have plenty of time to apply to jobs now that classes were virtual. Of course, I had to destroy any chance of keeping this extra time free by increasing the number of hours I was working at my PR agency internship to the maximum hours allowed. I was thrilled that I could have more involvement in my work at the internship because I finally found work that I didn't want to keep myself away from. The time blocks in my Google calendar for job searching were quickly overlooked, because my focus was only on the present.
Since I wasn't going to search for jobs myself, it seems a job was sent from Heaven to find me. An email rolled into my inbox sharing news about an Internal Communications position at UPMC.
I mustered up some energy and marched myself to my computer to apply. A week later, an email and a phone call led to a first interview. A few more interviews and lots of hope and prayer brought me to early April when I found out I had been hired for the position.
I realize how uncommon it is to only apply to one job your senior year of college, and how even more uncommon it is to actually get the job. To have this happen during a pandemic is even more extraordinary. This is a blessing I do not take lightly.
I have been working as an Internal Communication Specialist at UPMC for two months now. I went from being a commuter student in college who got off at her trolley stop every day in front of the U.S. Steel Building to a young professional who now has her very own desk at the top of that building. The view is spectacular, the people I work with and the work I get to do — even more so.

Though procrastination won't always get you far, sometimes the best things in life aren't your own discoveries, sometimes they're the opportunities that find you.
